Abstract

URIBE, Simón  and  GUZMAN-ROCHA, Jorge-Luis. Between the Jungle and the River: Conflicts and Urban Transformations in Puerto Guzmán, Putumayo. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.29, pp.161-191.  Epub Nov 24, 2021. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v14n29.93919.

This article focuses on the urbanization process of Puerto Guzmán (Putumayo), a municipality in the Colombian Amazon. Drawing on archival sources, oral memory and cartographic analysis, we examine this process through the interaction of historical and contemporary dynamics at the national, regional and local levels. Specifically, we analyze how the internal armed conflict, the water flow dynamics of the Caquetá River and political and institutional transitions within this municipality have produced changing and uneven urban morphologies. In doing so, the article seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the urban phenomenon in the Colombian Amazon and, in a broader sense, to the historical and geographical forces driving urban change at the regional scale.

Keywords : Amazon; urbanization; local history; armed conflict; urban morphologies.
