Abstract

ALEMAN, ARACELI. LITERALIZATION OF THE COW METAPHOR IN FERNANDA GARCÍA LAO'S DYSTOPIC IMAGERY. perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2022, vol.13, n.26, pp.30-48.  Epub May 14, 2022. ISSN 2145-8987.  https://doi.org/10.25025/perifrasis202213.26.02.

This work proposes a cognitive poetics based approach to the uchronic and dystopian imagery in García Lao's novel, Nación vacuna. It addresses the semantic contiguity between the feminine and the cow in the sense of the conceptual metaphor, with various linguistic expressions and levels of meaning in the narrative. Analysing a selection of such constructions (and related metonymies), it outlines a stylistic pattern relative to the speculative world composition tending towards certain metaphor literalization. Finally, it relates this pattern to gender conflicts in order to expose a public dimension to the animalization of violence against women.

Keywords : Fernanda García Lao; conceptual metaphor; cognitive poetics; contemporary literature; Argentina.
