The aim of this article is to analyze the situation of the imprisoned woman in connection with her understanding of the role of mother and caretaker, i.e., the protection of her children and the meaning of motherhood under exceptional circumstances. This implies an understanding of the emotional aspect of the woman, of the feeling of guilt and of the support networks which, from the point of view of Social Work, are an essential factor in the maintenance of ties between the woman in prison and the outside world.
