Job-searching processes and strategies are key factors in obtaining a job. The aim of this article is to estimate the effectiveness of job-searching mechanisms and the influence of sociodemographic characteristics of individuals in the selection of a job-searching mechanism. Descriptive statistics and indexing tools are used to determine the effectiveness of such searching mechanisms. A binary choice model analyzes the effects of including sociodemographic variables in searching mechanisms and the probability of finding employment. The Mexican labor market during the first trimester of 2017 is taken as a case study, using data from the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE). The key result is that the most effective job-searching mechanism is to resort to family, friends and acquaintances.
